Canada’s Minister of Defense is, Among Other Things, a Sikh

Lieutenant Colonel Harjit Sajjan has been appointed Minister of Defense by the new government of Canada.  Sajjan is a Sikh.  And was the most valuable Canadian intelligence officer in Afghanistan. And spent 11-years doing anti-gang police work in Vancouver.

And he would likely have never had those accomplishments in the US military despite imagining ourselves to be a pure meritocracy. Yes, there are provisions for Sikhs to serve, but somewhere, somehow along the way, people would have been made uncomfortable by his huge beard and turban and sidetracked his career.  And certainly no politician would have nominated somebody like him as Secretary of Defense.  And that bothers me a bit.

Good job, Canada.
